The Sport and Medical Sciences Academy’s (SMSA) mission is to develop a community of life-long learners in which students acquire the knowledge, skills, and courage to become productive citizens within a diverse society. SMSA utilizes a thematic approach in delivering a cross disciplinary curriculum, while integrating technology into all subject areas. SMSA is a college-preparatory middle and high school with a focus on sport and medical sciences. Students receive a rigorous language arts, mathematics, and science foundation that are applied in the core curriculum and various electives. Our core beliefs, dedication, responsibility, discipline and respect are embedded into our students’ educational experiences to develop social consciousness and leadership skills both within school and in the community. SMSA is located in the historic Coltsville section of Hartford. The building opened in 2008 and was expressly designed to facilitate our curriculum with “state of the art” technology. Classes are taught on a block schedule, which allows for thorough instruction of the subject area as well as thematic integration into the instruction. Emphasis is placed on creating opportunities for advanced study and career exploration in the fields of sport and medicine through partnerships with the educational and business community, job shadowing and internship/apprenticeships. Student learning is enriched through clubs, middle and high school athletics (CIAC), and a newly created music program. SMSA is a community school where parents and teachers serve as mentors, advisors and coaches and students are encouraged to take an active role in their learning and to achieve academic success. Based on 2009-10 enrollment data, the school meets the state integration standard. See page 4.
