The Capital Preparatory Magnet School is a year round college prep school with a social justice theme. For the past seven years, Capital Prep has been a 6th – 12th grade school but in 2011, they entered a partnership with Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth to create a gifted and talented PK-5th grade program. What’s truly unique about Capital Prep’s elementary school program is that the students have different teachers for the different subjects as young as kindergarten – they have a humanities teacher that focuses on reading, writing and history and another teacher that specializes in math and science. Capital Prep is the only year-round PK-12th grade school in the country. Capital Prep engages students in exploring issues of leadership, character and innovation. Since its inception, 100% of Capital Prep seniors have been accepted to four-year colleges. High school students participate in college classes and can earn between 30-50 college credits.
Every student at Capital Prep has an academic advisor that they meet with every day. Every advisor at Capital Prep only has a caseload of 11-15 students, similar to the model of an elite private prep school; whereas most public school guidance counselors have a caseload of 300-400 students. The advisors call the parents of their advisees at least twice a month to update the students’ families about their grades and the exciting things happening at school. Capital Prep believes communication between the school and the family is integral in the success of our students.
