Program Overview:
Our mission at the Asian Studies Academy (ASA) is to provide our K through 8 students with an intensive and comprehensive globalized education, focused on Mandarin and East Asian cultures of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The ASA utilizes best teaching practices and technology in order to foster responsible, respectful and caring citizens who will grow up to be culturally sensitive and linguistically diverse. With our mission in mind, ASA’s Mandarin and Asian Studies curricula are infused in students’ daily lessons to increase student understanding of cultures other than their own.
The vision of the Dwight-Bellizzi Asian Studies Academy is to be an exemplary academic learning community with international partnerships. We expect our students to be multilingual and to possess the skills they need to connect, collaborate and compete in an increasingly interdependent world. The collaboration with our sister school, Jinan Experimental Middle School in China’s Shangdong province will ensure that ASA fulfills its vision. Projecting forward, ASA will develop students who are problem solvers and are technologically savvy. Already sent our first group of student explorers to China in our first year of operation, the ASA look forward to having our students offer solutions and debate global issues in English and Mandarin with our Chinese counterparts in the future. The staff at ASA also looks forward to the process of teacher sharing of curricula and jointly attending educational seminars in order to create unit projects to better guide all of our students.
Dwight-Bellizzi Asian Studies Academy is also a community school and that effort is lead by Compass Youth Collaborative. In a community school youth, parents, families and community residents work as equal partners with schools and other community institutions to develop programs and services in five areas: quality education, youth development, family support, family and community engagement, and community development. Compass in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Hartford also provides quality after-school programming for students in grades K-8.
